A long time ago an earthquake occured off the shore of Hamada, in Shimane Prefecture. The earthquake lifted a large chunk of the seafloor above the waves. This has resulted in a very unique collection of formations in the area.

There were lots of interesting rocks around Motonosumi Inari Shrine, but these in particular interested me. 

The whitish rocks in these pictures have lots of cracks running through them, but if you look closely you’ll see that the rock is actually raised up at the cracks. Wherever the rock was split there was a little lip. I’m curious what caused this.
